      With the expansion of the computer room, the capacity requirements for the diesel generator sets as backup power sources are increasing. Multiple high-power diesel generator sets need to be connected in parallel to meet the load requirements. Moreover, the distance between the computer room and the actual load is getting farther and farther. The traditional parallel operation of multiple low-voltage diesel generator sets exposes many operational and transmission defects. To ensure safer and more reliable operation, using high-voltage generator sets is a better choice. 


The high-voltage units are applied in emergency backup power systems of metallurgical enterprises, airports, data centers, etc. As the output voltage of the units is 10kV, which is consistent with the original power supply system voltage, they can be directly connected to the power supply system, eliminating the need for a large amount of equipment investment in the power distribution system. At the same time, due to the high output voltage and small output current of the units, there is little power loss during the power transmission process, making them suitable for long-distance transmission.

III. Relationship between Power, Voltage, and Current

P = 1.732 × U × I × COSΦ

Take a 2000kW unit as an example. With a power factor of 0.8 and a frequency of 50Hz, the low-voltage (400V) current is: I = P / (1.732 × U × COSΦ) = 2000 × 10³ / (1.732 × 400 × 0.8) = 3609A

The high-voltage (10.5KV) current is: I = P / (1.732 × U × COSΦ) = 2000 × 10³ / (1.732 × 10.5 × 10³ × 0.8) = 137A. The high-voltage transmission current is approximately 1/26 of the low-voltage transmission current.

IV. Application of High-Voltage Diesel Generator Sets

Based on the application characteristics of the high and low voltage diesel generator sets mentioned above, in applications with large capacity requirements and long transmission distances, high-voltage diesel generator sets have obvious advantages such as large capacity, long-distance power supply, centralized construction of the machine room, strong reliability, and simple supporting power distribution system. They are an inevitable trend for the selection and application of large-capacity units. High-voltage diesel generator sets have been widely applied in banks, data centers, metallurgy, aviation, and other fields.

The main voltage levels of 50Hz high-voltage diesel generator sets are: 6kV, 6.3kV, 6.6kV, 10kV, 10.5kV, 11kV, etc. Each unit has a power of generally over 1000kW, and multiple units are used in parallel.

VI. Brief Description of the Control System and Integrated Protection System

The high-voltage unit control system mainly consists of two parts: the high-voltage switch cabinet and the centralized control console.

The high-voltage switch cabinet can be centrally managed in a dedicated power distribution room, and the centralized control console can be installed in the central control room.

The integrated protectors installed on the high-voltage switch cabinet and the 8808 control panel on the centralized control console all have universal RS232 and MODBUS communication protocol interfaces. Users can collect real-time data of the entire control system as needed for centralized monitoring and archiving management. The high-voltage 8808 intelligent control system mainly consists of the generator incoming cabinet (parallel cabinet) and PT cabinet, and outgoing cabinet. The 8808 intelligent main controller itself has integrated comprehensive generator protection functions and has met the basic protection requirements of the unit and its affiliated equipment. As a backup redundant protection, users can select the integrated protection device (optional) and differential protection device (optional) on the parallel cabinet according to the actual project needs and operational habits, and the integrated protection device (optional) on the outgoing cabinet to effectively protect the unit and ensure stable operation of the equipment installation.

Operating Instructions for Diesel Generators

1. Use No. 0 to -30# light diesel oil; specify to use 15W-40CD grade engine oil (or as required by the diesel engine manual).

2. The starting temperature should be above +5℃; when using an oil heating device with water, the starting temperature should be -15℃; when the unit is used below 0℃, anti-freezing fluid and other low-temperature starting measures should be adopted.

3. Noise coefficient of the unit: ≤ 85~95db(A), in line with international standards.

4. Our company can provide both land-based 8KW-1600KW units and ship-based units with the same power range, as well as various 60Hz 1800 rpm generators.

5. The generators produced by our company comply with the provisions of GB/T2820.1, 5, 6 and ISO8528 "Generators Driven by Reciprocating Internal Combustion Engines".

6. Adjustment method: automatic or manual.

7. Users in cold regions should note: according to the changes in temperature, the engine oil, diesel, and coolant should be appropriately adjusted to ensure the normal operation of the unit.
